Most individuals and organizations rely entirely on opportunistic modeling. They look at an opportunity that arises or maybe the market, spot a chance for some gain or an available gap, and chase it. They set a linear target—let’s say, getting a job or promotion, make a significant sale, or creating one million dollars in new revenue. They measure success by a single, static metric: Did we get the outcome?
But getting hired, making a sale, or hitting a number is a static snapshot. It treats the target as a finish line. What it ignores is the day after. It fails to ask: What happens to the rest of our system because the outcome was achieved?
When you chase an opportunity blindly, you don’t see the secondary ripples. You don’t see that hitting that specific target might over-allocate your personal or organizational resources, killing a change at realizing an alternative outcome. You don't see that it might tie you to a toxic client that demands an unreasonable investment of resources to satisfy or destroys your company culture.
